While 6ft mini-FRED is demo-ing at the Ocean Discovery Institute, we are building our 16ft FRED Jr. prototype utilizing two used catamarans. We are prototyping and updating our solar power subsystem, autonomous navigation, remote-control capabilities and sensor integration, and debris collection subsystem and storage offloading to operate on local marine waters.

Clear Blue Sea is leasing a commercial warehouse in San Diego so we continue working on several STEM internship programs in engineering, social media, educational outreach, and fundraising efforts by reading our newsletter. We continue to focus on completing the development of our 16-foot FRED Prototype this winter along with creating an online store.

Goldman Sachs awarded Clear Blue Sea $2500 for being in the top 25 of nonprofits assessed and advocated for by 975 GS analyst teams around the world. This year was the program’s most competitive in its four-year history, with 375 applications submitted by 975 GS analysts.

Herbivore Botanicals does more than just sell ecofriendly skincare products – they also support nonprofits which are committed to conserving the environment. This year, Herbivore Botanicals made a $15,800 donation to Clear Blue Sea to support development of our Floating Robot for Eliminating Debris (FRED) prototype designed to collect marine plastic and debris in rivers, bays, coasts, and oceans.

During startup phase, Clear Blue Sea worked out of our homes, garages, driveways, and on college campuses to design and develop our first two prototypes of our Floating Robot for Eliminating Debris (FRED). Now that we are building a 16-foot marine robot prototype we call “FRED Jr.”, we needed a larger collaborative space for our STEM student interns and volunteers to more effective work as integrated project teams.

Two Clear Blue Sea senior engineering design teams demonstrated their Mini FRED robot designs at a joint demo day. The “Plastic Pirates” from SDSU built their robot prototype to look like the Clear Blue Sea FRED Conceptual model, while the “Trashy Pelicans” and “FRED’s Angels” designed their robot to optimize collection function.

Clear Blue Sea’s USD Senior Design Team 2018-19, sponsored by Clarity Design, won an engineering prize for their senior design project. The judging panel was impressed with the depth and breadth of work the team accomplished over the semester.

Morgan Stanley awarded first prize of $75,000 to Clear Blue Sea for their 2019 Giving Circle Award for 2019. Susie Baer, Executive Director of Clear Blue Sea, attended the ceremony in Pebble Beach to receive the award.

Clear Blue Sea is one of six startups selected for the San Diego Blue Tech Incubator, sponsored by the City of San Diego, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Dentons Law Office, and The Maritime Alliance. Mayor Faulconer attended the opening ceremony of the Blue Tech Incubator and supports the development of ocean-focused startup companies.
