Internship Projects Provide Challenging Work for Students

Clear Blue Sea has an extensive Internship Program that provides students with opportunities to participate in performing our mission of “cleansing the oceans of plastic pollution.”

  • All Disciplines Welcome

Internships in robotics, engineering, sustainability, fundraising, website development, social media outreach, business management, education, and community relations.

  • All Ages Above 15 Welcome

Internships for students at the high school, college, and post-grad levels and beyond.

  • Volunteer or Academic Credit or Outside Funding

Internships are volunteer positions, although academic credit is available and there are schools which directly fund our internships.

  • Career Development Benefits

We provide boot camp training in ocean conservancy, robotics engineering, sustainability, project management, and collaborative teamwork. Interns are given professional functional titles reflecting their project assignments, such as Mechanical Engineer, Financial Analyst, Marine Scientist, Videographer, etc. We provide letters of recommendation and serve as job references to support future career development.

FRED Prototype Testing and Local Demonstrations

Clear Blue Sea has built four FRED prototypes to date and they are all located in our warehouse. Due to Covid preventing us from fully testing these prototypes for over a year, a key project is to develop a complete set of test procedures, conduct testing in the warehouse and in the water, and enhance the prototypes as needed so they can be used for local demonstrations and cleanup operations.

  • FRED Do-it-Yourself – FREDDY

FRED Do-It-Yourself (FREDDY) Implementation Program

Clear Blue Sea has designed a version of FRED that could be built by anyone or any organization around the world interested in cleansing their own marine environments of plastic pollution. Implementing FREDDY world-wide supports the sustainability mission to think globally, act locally and the UN Sustainability Goal #14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. Interns are needed to complete Clear Blue Sea’s FREDDY Instructional Package, fully test our FREDDY model, and help implement the pilot phase of this program.

  • Interns working on FREDDY

FREDDY Collaborative Website

When project teams around the world build their own FREDDY’s using our instructional package, we will request that they share their unique FREDDY designs and lessons learned on our Collaborative Ocean Remediation Assist Link (CORAL). This website will support the global sharing of FREDDY projects for educational, problem-solving, and plastic cleanup accomplishments. The CORAL website project involves design, development, piloting, and implementation in parallel with the FREDDY Implementation Program.

  • Cafe Virtuoso Glass Containers

Marine Sciences and Sustainability Projects

We have many initiatives, all driven by the passions of our interns and mission. Clear Blue Sea is performing ecosystem research in Mission Bay to support the Kendall Frost Marsh Reserve in creating a baseline of its environmental health. Across multiple shores, Clear Blue Sea is conducting beach cleanups and reporting debris collected metrics for data analysis. To address plastic waste from restaurant takeout containers, Clear Blue Sea is piloting an initiative for zero-waste food and beverage containers. Our first success is with Café Virtuoso, which is giving customers the option to have a coffee glass container with an insulated sleeve provided by Clear Blue Sea made from 100% recycled plastic bottles from beach cleanups. We have piloted this initiative and will be expanding its reach throughout 2021 and beyond!

  • Posts from our Instagram

Social Media Outreach Program

Clear Blue Sea posts on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube to share our news, educational materials, and collaborations. For Instagram, our Outreach Team develops creative individual posts that reflects their passion for ocean conservancy, FRED initiatives, and sustainability practices. For Facebook and LinkedIn, we provide longer posts on ocean plastic pollution, our FRED development accomplishments, and outreach achievements. Clear Blue Sea’s YouTube site presents various videos on FRED Prototype Development, Internship Projects, and ClearBlue Sea Overviews.

Grant Writing and Fundraising

Clear Blue Sea’s Development Team focuses on securing funding from philanthropists, foundations, environmental conservancy organizations, and governmental agencies. We research potential grant opportunities that align with our mission to cleanse the oceans of plastic pollution. We also create fundraisers to gather donations for sustaining our warehouse so we can continue to work on FREDs. We teach our interns about researching grant opportunities, contributing on the proposal writing process, and developing strategies for fundraising.

A HUGE THANKS to Tom Lupfer of Clarity Design for being a Visionary Clear Blue Sea Internship Program Sponsor
